Authorities were alerted to the situation at approximately 9:15 a.m. Toronto Fire division commander Paul O’Brien confirmed that initial reports suggested a gas explosion. However, upon arrival, fire crews found no active fire but several injured workers.
Injuries Reported
- Seven workers transported to the hospital.
- Three individuals sustained minor injuries.
- Four others are suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Toronto Paramedic Services Chief Bikram Chawla reported that he could not disclose specific injury details due to privacy regulations. Following the explosion, workers at the site were evacuated safely. Construction workers congregated outside, expressing concern for their colleagues’ well-being.
Ongoing Investigation
Commander O’Brien mentioned that the investigation into the explosion is ongoing, and he could not estimate when workers might be allowed to return to the site. Luke Pravica, a construction worker present during the incident, indicated he had heard rumors of a gas leak prior to the explosion, calling it a “concerning” situation.

Gas explosions are relatively rare in Toronto, according to O’Brien. He did not specify the type of gas involved but assured that an investigation is underway. The Ministry of Labour has also been notified, and an inspector is assigned to examine the incident further.
