Heavy Truck Hits Ceiling, Closing Louis-H. La Fontaine Tunnel and A25 South

A heavy truck incident has disrupted traffic at the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel, leading to its temporary closure. This event occurred shortly after the tunnel had undergone renovations six months ago.
Incident Details
The incident took place on Tuesday morning around 9 AM. According to the Ministry of Transport, the truck driver struck the tunnel ceiling while traveling southbound on Highway 25. Despite the low clearance, the driver continued driving, resulting in damage to the structure.
Height Restrictions
Upon its reopening in May, the tunnel’s height limit was set at 4.3 meters. During the collision, a piece of the ceiling detached from its place. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident.
Traffic Disruptions
Traffic was officially halted at 9:27 AM starting from Notre-Dame Street heading south. A major operation was initiated to clear stranded vehicles caught behind the damaged truck.
- Suggested detour: Jacques-Cartier Bridge, located 12 kilometers away.
- Impact on northbound traffic: Only one lane is open, leading to extremely heavy congestion.
Current Situation
Authorities stated that southbound traffic would remain closed for several hours. Assessments are currently underway to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the incident. Longueuil traffic cameras indicate significant delays as motorists navigate the surrounding areas.
