Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, recently emphasized the importance of embracing challenges to foster innovation. He shared these insights during an appearance on the “David Senra” podcast.

Leadership in Challenging Times

Dell highlighted that effective leadership shines through during crises. He reflected on various challenges faced by Dell Technologies in its 40-year history. The company has navigated significant events, including:

  • The dot-com bubble burst
  • The 2008 financial crisis
  • The rise of mobile technology

During his podcast discussion, Dell stated, “If you don’t have a crisis, make one.” This mantra serves as a reminder that challenges can stimulate motivation and drive necessary changes within an organization.

Motivating Teams and Driving Change

According to Dell, leadership requires adapting strategies and motivating teams effectively. He posed critical questions aimed at optimizing team performance. Dell asked:

  • How do you organize the team to achieve goals?
  • How do you motivate individuals?
  • What tools do employees need to succeed?

He stressed that bringing teams back together can enhance motivation. Throughout 2024, Dell Technologies implemented a return-to-office (RTO) policy. By March 2025, employees were expected to work on-site five days a week, although opinions on the policy varied.

Adapting to New Technologies

Dell warned against complacency in the face of new technological advancements. He stated, “If you’ve been doing something for a long time, and a new method emerges, you need to adapt.”

In line with this, Dell Technologies is actively pursuing artificial intelligence initiatives. Internal documents revealed a transformative project dubbed “Project Maverick.” This initiative aims to standardize the company’s operations and integrate systems, data, and processes.

According to Dell, adapting to change is crucial. He reiterated, “People don’t like to change, but you have to.” Embracing innovation can ultimately secure the future success of organizations in an evolving market.
