Luka Vows to Lead Team During LeBron’s Absence

As the Los Angeles Lakers prepare for the upcoming season, they face challenges ahead. LeBron James is expected to miss the start of the season due to right-sided sciatica. In his absence, Luka Doncic has stepped forward, emphasizing that he does not feel pressured to compensate for James’ scoring. Instead, his focus remains on contributing to team wins.
Luka Doncic’s Role During LeBron’s Absence
Following a recent practice, Doncic clarified, “I just want to play basketball. If I do less or more, whatever it takes to get a win.” Despite hopes for a strong preseason, the Lakers are currently 0-2 after losing games against the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors.
Upcoming Preseason Games
- Next Game: Rematch against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
- Road Game: Against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.
- Back-to-Back: Facing the Dallas Mavericks in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Coach JJ Redick mentioned that Doncic is expected to play in two of the remaining four preseason matches. Recently, Doncic practiced fully, recovering from summer commitments with the Slovenia national team. He stated, “Playing one month for Slovenia was a lot. It’s a long season ahead.”
Redick’s Coaching Challenge
With James out for three to four weeks, Redick faces the challenge of establishing a starting lineup without their star player. Doncic, guard Austin Reaves, and center Deandre Ayton are confirmed starters, but the remaining two positions remain uncertain. Options include Rui Hachimura, who previously started 57 out of 59 games last season, and Jarred Vanderbilt, who has shown improved health.
Additionally, free-agent signings Jake LaRavia and Marcus Smart add versatile options to the team. Smart, recovering from Achilles tendinopathy, is expected to participate in the game against the Warriors.
Building Team Chemistry
Doncic has noted the importance of communication with James, even from the sidelines. “We’ve talked a lot,” he shared, indicating that this bonding helps establish chemistry within the team. The Lakers understand that, while James is a vital asset, the team must adopt a ‘next man up’ mentality.
“It’s a big change,” Doncic expressed, recognizing the impact of playing without James. “We are going to need him back soon, but we have to maintain our focus.” With this mindset, the Lakers aim for resilience and adaptability in their upcoming challenge.
