End of Métrobus 804 in Loretteville: Residents Feel Betrayed

The recent discontinuation of Métrobus 804 in Loretteville has stirred significant unrest among local residents. This change, effective since late August, removed service to eight stops in the neighborhood, leaving many feeling abandoned.

Service Changes in Loretteville

As part of the RTC’s 2025-2028 Development Plan, the route was altered to extend to Val-Bélair. However, it no longer connects to central Loretteville near Racine Street.

Community Reaction

Local community organizer Émilie Frémont-Cloutier expressed concern over the impacts of this change. “While Val-Bélair needed improved service, it feels like we’re sacrificing Loretteville,” she stated.

Residents now face longer walks to reach bus route 70, which has been improved to operate every 20 minutes during peak hours. Nevertheless, Frémont-Cloutier noted that this alternative “does not meet demand.” The smaller 70 buses carry fewer passengers and have earlier last runs compared to the previous Métrobus service.

Business Impact

  • Marc Savard, owner of Le Minimaliste grocery store, reported a 6% drop in sales since the removal of Métrobus 804.
  • Isabelle Hudon, owner of Café Racine, shared her disappointment regarding decreased foot traffic, particularly among students.

Both business owners highlighted that many customers previously came from Sainte-Foy using the 804, making their shops accessible.

Concerns for Vulnerable Populations

Community leaders are particularly worried about the repercussions for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and individuals with reduced mobility. Frémont-Cloutier emphasized that many residents rely on accessible transportation to reach essential services.

Johanie Paquette, a community worker at Carrefour Jeunesse-Emploi-Chauveau, reported that at least 50% of her clients have been adversely affected, facing difficulties getting to work or attending appointments.

Survey Results

The community collective La Pieuvre conducted a survey revealing widespread dissatisfaction with the bus rerouting. Key findings include:

  • 145 respondents reported longer travel times.
  • 37 individuals faced increased transport costs.
  • 90 residents indicated greater difficulty accessing local services.
  • 152 people called for the return of Métrobus 804.

Houcine Boutrih, a community mobilization agent, noted that while the new route might optimize travel for the RTC, it significantly inconveniences Loretteville residents.

RTC’s Response

The RTC acknowledged the changes in transportation habits but argues that existing routes provide adequate service. They believe that bus routes 70, 72, 84, and the new route 74 connect residents effectively to destinations, including Sainte-Foy.

Raphaëlle Savard, a spokesperson for the RTC, stated, “We view the new system as a simplification and expansion of services.” However, many residents remain doubtful, feeling their needs are being overlooked.
