Alaska Villages Begin 18-Month Recovery Following Severe Flooding
Severe flooding has devastated numerous remote villages in Alaska, impacting over 2,000 residents. Governor Mike Dunleavy has requested a major disaster declaration from the White House to aid recovery. Many affected individuals are unlikely to return to their homes for at least 18 months.
Extent of Damage in Alaska Villages
The flooding primarily impacted the village of Kipnuk, where 121 homes were destroyed, accounting for 90% of its total housing. In Kwigillingok, around one-third of the homes became uninhabitable after the disaster. The intense storm surge was a result of Typhoon Halong, which hit with hurricane-like strength.
Casualties and Ongoing Rescue Efforts
The floods resulted in one confirmed death and left two people missing. Rescue teams undertook significant efforts to airlift residents from inundated villages. Many individuals are currently sheltering in local schools or have been evacuated to Anchorage.

State Representative Nellie Unangiq Jimmie recounted her own experience during the storm, highlighting the peril faced by residents. She expressed gratitude for the support extended to evacuees, emphasizing their shared connection to Alaska.
Federal Assistance Initiatives
The Federal Government has begun assisting with various recovery efforts, including search and rescue operations and damage assessments. A major disaster declaration could provide additional federal support for rebuilding individual and community infrastructure.
