Authorities Dismantle Illegal Connections in Boca Chica Businesses

In a recent operation, authorities dismantled illegal electrical connections affecting various businesses in Boca Chica, Santo Domingo. This initiative was coordinated by Edeeste, the regional electricity distribution company, alongside the General Prosecutor’s Office for the Electrical System (Pgase).
Significant Findings
Investigations revealed major discrepancies in energy consumption across multiple establishments, including a gas station and several industrial warehouses. The technical report from Edeeste indicates that these businesses are responsible for an estimated energy consumption of 61,178 kWh.
Cost Implications
This excessive consumption translates into a financial impact of approximately RD$ 830,450.99 annually, negatively affecting both Edeeste and the Dominican government. Alarmingly, energy losses in Boca Chica have surpassed 75%.
Continued Operations against Fraud
Edeeste, Pgase, and the Superintendence of Electricity (SIE) have expressed their commitment to further audits throughout the distribution area’s concession. These efforts aim to identify irregular electricity usage by unregulated customers and delinquent accounts.
- Goal: To establish a more just and efficient electrical system.
- Strategy: Zero tolerance towards electrical fraud.
- Impact: Prevents overloading the distribution network, maintaining service quality.
Legal Framework
Illegal activities sanctioned under Electricity Law 125-01 disproportionately affect compliant users. The authorities urge the public to report any illegal actions that compromise the electrical system, particularly unauthorized connections made by individuals and businesses.
