Tim Curry Discusses Stroke, Iconic Rocky Horror Role, and New Memoir ‘Vagabond’

Tim Curry recently discussed his life after a stroke he experienced in 2012. This occurred unexpectedly during a massage session when his therapist advised him to seek medical attention. Unaware of any symptoms, Curry initially felt fine, yet he soon learned he had suffered a stroke.

Facing Health Challenges

Upon arriving at the hospital, Curry thought about his father’s tragic history with strokes, leading to feelings of fear. “I was scared,” he recalled. Following his diagnosis, he underwent brain surgery and faced a difficult rehabilitation process.

“I had to learn how to speak again,” Curry mentioned. This was one of the most challenging aspects of his recovery, along with dealing with the paralysis on the left side of his face. “My face kind of went sideways,” he described, emphasizing the hardships he had to overcome.

Iconic Role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Throughout his career, Curry has taken on numerous memorable roles, notably as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He acknowledged that this character provided empowerment to many who felt different. “He gave a lot of teenagers permission to be different,” Curry stated, expressing pride in the impact of his role.

New Memoir: Vagabond

Curry has also published a new memoir titled Vagabond. However, he clarified that it isn’t intended to be a tell-all. “One of the keys is to not encourage an identity,” he explained, adding that some secrets should remain undisclosed.

Personal Reflections

In the interview with Ben Mankiewicz for CBS Sunday Morning, Curry shared insights about his upbringing. He reflected on his mother’s possible bipolar disorder and how her mood swings impacted him. Despite her conflicting feelings toward his success, he remained resolute. “I didn’t give a shit about the radar,” he stated regarding his desire for fame.

Curry emphasized his outlook on life and death, expressing a lack of fear regarding his mortality. “I try to avoid it,” he remarked with humor, indicating that he might ultimately find comfort in the idea of passing on.
