Despite inclement weather, Tamil Nadu enthusiastically welcomed Deepavali on October 20, 2025. The Festival of Lights, traditionally celebrated with joy and community spirit, saw residents embracing the occasion, even as rain posed challenges.
Rain-Soaked Celebrations in Tamil Nadu
On this festive day, families in Tamil Nadu dressed in new outfits and participated in the customary practice of bursting firecrackers. While heavy rain interfered with outdoor festivities, people adapted by bursting crackers during breaks in the downpour.
Government Guidelines on Firecrackers
The Tamil Nadu Government provided clear instructions regarding the use of firecrackers. In line with a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, citizens were allowed to light fireworks in two specific timeframes: between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Moreover, officials emphasized the need to avoid using firecrackers in sensitive areas such as:
- around hospitals
- near huts
- in other fire-prone locations
Leaders Extend Festive Greetings
On this significant day, prominent figures shared their wishes. Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi expressed his hopes for happiness and harmony in the community through a message on X. He emphasized the blessings of Maa Lakshmi for prosperity and peace.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister, conveyed a similar sentiment. He wished for love and unity to flourish across the country, stating that the festival should bring forth joy and prosperity for all.

As part of the traditional observance, renowned actor Rajinikanth engaged with fans in front of his residence in Poes Garden, Chennai, offering his greetings. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam, shared his Deepavali message on X, highlighting the significance of light in dispelling darkness.
