Water District Hosts Community Education Event

The Alameda County Water District (ACWD) hosted a community education event named “An Evening in the Garden with Pints & Plants” on October 16. This initiative aimed to promote water conservation as part of the nationwide Value of Water campaign.

Community Engagement in Water Conservation

Held at Birdhaus Beer Garden in Union City, the event ran from 4 PM to 7 PM. It attracted around 35 participants within the first hour, highlighting strong community interest. ACWD Public Affairs Supervisor Sharene Gonzales emphasized the importance of education, stating, “We really just wanna spread the word, because every drop counts.”

Fun Activities for All Ages

The event was designed to be a family-friendly activity, welcoming attendees of all ages. Participants enjoyed complimentary food from the local restaurant Da Good Vibes, which featured dishes like Spam musubi, Filipino lumpia, and adobo chicken wings. Beer was also available for purchase, enhancing the communal atmosphere.

Interactive Planting Experience

Attendees engaged in a planting activity that involved filling pots with soil provided by ACWD. Through a “plant personality” quiz, guests learned about their water use behaviors and received succulent plants based on their results. Each participant received a pot, soil, and pebbles to stabilize their newly planted succulents.

  • Quizzes included fun titles like “Casual Conservation Conspirator” and “High Maintenance Hydrator.”
  • Representatives from the University of California Master Gardener Program were present to answer questions about landscaping and gardening.

Annual Commitment to Water Conservation

ACWD organizes annual water conservation awareness events every October. This year marked their first collaboration with Birdhaus Beer Garden. In the previous year, they offered tours of their water treatment plant, which are available by request from Tuesday to Thursday.

These efforts reflect ACWD’s commitment to educating the community about the importance of conserving water and sustainable gardening practices.
