Details of the Refund Process

Eligible Amazon Prime subscribers may receive a maximum refund of $51 from the settlement. The following outlines key details about the refund process:

  • The settlement applies to consumers who subscribed to Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.
  • Refund amounts depend on the total fees each customer paid during their subscription.
  • Payouts will occur in two phases:
    • The first group will receive automatic payments within 90 days.
    • The second group must complete a form to claim their refund after the initial payout period.

The first group includes subscribers who encountered problematic enrollment methods and utilized three or fewer Prime benefits in a year. Refunds for this cohort will be capped at $51.

Accusations and Amazon’s Response

The FTC accused Amazon and some executives of steering consumers into signing up for Prime under misleading pretenses. The agency reported that Amazon employed deceptive user interfaces, making it challenging for users to cancel subscriptions. This approach allegedly violated both the FTC Act and the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA).

In response, Amazon has maintained that it operates within the legal framework. A company spokesperson, Mark Blafkin, stated their commitment to being transparent with customers about the subscription process and emphasized their effort to ensure a straightforward cancellation experience.
