Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s leader in Westminster, has presented a parliamentary motion targeting Prince Andrew’s dukedom. This action aims to compel government ministers to strip him of the Duke of York title promptly.

Recently, Prince Andrew announced his decision to relinquish all titles, including the Earl of Inverness. Despite this voluntary abandonment, there is growing pressure for a more definitive removal of his titles through legislative action.

Details of the Motion

The SNP’s motion comes after previous attempts to challenge privileges linked to figures associated with Epstein. Flynn emphasizes the urgency of parliament’s action, highlighting the need for the Labour government to introduce legislation that addresses this issue directly. He stated:

• “The only real question is, what is Keir Starmer’s government waiting for?”
• The motion aims to increase pressure on the government to act decisively.

In September, the SNP had a similar motion targeting Lord Mandelson, focusing on his peerage amid questions about his Epstein-related connections.

Context of Prince Andrew’s Titles

Significantly, Prince Andrew ceased using the title His Royal Highness (HRH) in 2022 amidst civil allegations of sexual assault from Virginia Giuffre. Although he denied these allegations, he settled the case without admitting liability.

Giuffre’s memoir, published recently, cited instances of encounters with Prince Andrew, escalating public scrutiny and concern.

Government’s Stance

The UK government appears reluctant to act unless explicitly directed by the Royal Family. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson remarked on national broadcasting:
