Jennifer Lawrence Reflects on Peaceful Two-Year Acting Hiatus

Jennifer Lawrence recently reflected on her two-year acting hiatus during an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show.” The Oscar-winning actress described feeling “at peace” with stepping away from Hollywood after a series of disappointing box office performances.
Jennifer Lawrence’s Acting Hiatus
Lawrence’s decision to take a break followed her fourth Oscar nomination for the 2015 film “Joy.” She starred in several films that underperformed, including:
- “Passengers” (2016)
- “Mother!” (2017)
- “Red Sparrow” (2018)
- “Dark Phoenix” (2019)
In late 2021, she made her return to acting with the ensemble comedy “Don’t Look Up,” directed by Adam McKay. Reflecting on her hiatus, Lawrence explained, “I took a little time. I was working all of my twenties, and then I was like… what’s out here? What’s going on?”
Concerns about Hollywood’s Demands
When asked if she feared not being able to re-enter the industry, Lawrence stated, “I was at peace with that possibility.” She acknowledged the pressures of Hollywood, admitting that while she might have been okay with leaving, she also would have felt upset.
In a previous interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence emphasized that the break was necessary, as she felt she was no longer producing quality work. She noted, “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me.”
Creative Exhaustion and Recovery
Lawrence described how the pressures of fame affected her mental state, stating that she felt like she was “people-pleasing” throughout her career. Her longtime friend Justine Polsky commented on the situation, saying, “The protocol of stardom began to kill her creative spirit.”
This hiatus allowed Lawrence to recharge and restore her passion for acting. She is now back in the public eye as she promotes “Die My Love,” a psychodrama that premiered at Cannes earlier this year. In this film, she plays a woman navigating the complexities of marriage and motherhood, co-starring with Robert Pattinson.
Upcoming Release
“Die My Love” is set to hit theaters on November 7, distributed by Mubi. With this new project, Lawrence aims to make her mark once again in the world of cinema while showcasing her evolved perspective on fame and artistry.
