Italian Coast Guard Recovers Bodies from Capsized Boat in Maltese Waters

The Italian Coast Guard has successfully recovered the bodies from a capsized boat in Maltese waters. This operation was initiated following a request for assistance from the Maltese Search and Rescue Authority.
Details of the Recovery Operation
In total, seven bodies were recovered: one man, five women, and one minor. The operations were coordinated by the Maltese maritime rescue center after an Italian Coast Guard aircraft detected an overturned boat during the night of October 16-17.
Rescue Efforts
- The initial search involved a passing merchant vessel and an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat.
- Rescue teams managed to save 11 individuals and recovered one body during the initial phase.
Additional support came from Maltese aerial assets, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), and the Italian Financial Police. Despite continuous efforts, the recovery operations faced significant challenges.
Challenges Encountered
Severe weather conditions and rough seas created obstacles that prolonged the search and recovery efforts. Consequently, operations had to be halted multiple times to ensure the safety of personnel involved.
This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. The joint efforts of various agencies underscore the collaborative approach taken to address maritime emergencies in the region.
