Traditional Custodians Uphold Age-Old Customs on Bestu Varsh Morning

A tradition dating back generations is maintained on Bestu Varsh, the Gujarati New Year, in Ahmedabad. As the dawn breaks, traders gather at Manek Chowk to initiate rituals that symbolize new beginnings. This is not merely a business transaction; it is an act of reverence and continuity.

Bestu Varsh Traditions in Ahmedabad

The observance of Bestu Varsh includes rituals such as:

  • Opening shops personally by the owners.
  • Lighting diyas and performing a small pooja.
  • Inscribing the first entry in a new ‘hisaab’ book.
  • Using traditional crackers to celebrate the occasion.

Jigar Soni, a jeweler whose family has participated in this tradition since 1970, emphasizes its significance. “It’s less about transactions and more about gratitude and continuity,” he states.

Significance of the Ritual

Traders participate in this ritual during the New Year Muhurat, which occurs between 7 AM and 8:30 AM each year. Although the city’s commerce resumes later in the week during Labh Pancham, the ritual underscores the cultural fabric connecting the community.

Many shop owners prior to modern times actively engaged in this practice, invoking blessings from Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. This created a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of crackers and temple bells.

The Evolving Landscape of Business

However, the tradition of Bestu Varsh is quietly diminishing. The shift towards modern work schedules and digital accounting means fewer business owners engage in early morning rituals. Amish Shah, a third-generation textile trader, observes, “Our traditions remain intact. We still follow the same ritual on New Year’s Day.”

Community Celebrations Declining

Hemant Choksi, an experienced bullion trader, recalls how this occasion used to unify the community. “Previously, it was a festive event where people exchanged sweets and greetings throughout the markets,” he explains.

As the landscape of Ahmedabad’s commerce changes, the timeless practices seen on Bestu Varsh continue to hold meaning for those who honor their heritage. Nevertheless, this cherished tradition faces challenges as society embraces modernization.
