Health Canada Mistakenly Approves Dental Coverage for Tens of Thousands

Health Canada has announced a significant error regarding its public dental insurance program. Tens of thousands of Canadians were mistakenly approved for dental coverage. The number of individuals affected is approximately 70,000.

Details of the Mistaken Approvals

According to Health Canada, about 28,000 of these individuals received dental care under the miscalculated coverage. An issue was identified in how income was assessed during the eligibility process. This mistake has now been rectified with a system update.

No Repayments Required

Importantly, those who received dental services will not need to repay Health Canada for the coverage they utilized. This decision alleviates financial concerns for many who benefited from the program.

Coverage Statistics

  • Over 5 million Canadians are theoretically covered under the program.
  • Only about 3 million have actually utilized their coverage.
  • The program is designed for residents with a family net income under $90,000 without private insurance.
  • On average, each participant had around $800 in dental expenses covered per year.

About the Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan was launched in May 2024, initially benefiting seniors, children, and those qualifying for the disability tax credit. By May 2025, the program expanded to encompass all eligible Canadians.

This extensive, multibillion-dollar public insurance initiative was implemented following negotiations between the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the previous Liberal minority government led by Prime Minister Trudeau. The agreement included the establishment of major social programs, including comprehensive dental coverage.
