Shane Watson Concludes Coaching Role with San Francisco Unicorns

Shane Watson, the former Australian allrounder, has ended his coaching role with the San Francisco Unicorns after three years. This transition comes as the franchise shifts towards a year-round coaching model. The Unicorns have yet to announce Watson’s successor.

Transition in Coaching Strategy

The San Francisco Unicorns aim to strengthen their long-term coaching framework. The franchise plans to implement a year-round coaching model to enhance their competitive edge in Major League Cricket (MLC).

“Watson’s ongoing commitments and the rapid expansion of his BEON Performance coaching brand prevent him from accepting a full-time role,” the organization stated.

Watson’s Coaching Tenure

  • 2023: Unicorns finished fifth out of six teams in their inaugural season.
  • 2024: They reached the playoffs and ended as runners-up against the Washington Freedom.
  • 2025: The Unicorns qualified for the playoffs again.

Reflecting on his time with the franchise, Watson expressed pride in leading the team. He praised the opportunity to work with both established stars and emerging talent. “It has been a true privilege,” he noted.

Future Endeavors

In addition to his role with the Unicorns, Watson has had coaching experience in several other leagues. Recently, he served as the assistant coach for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2022 to 2023. In 2024, he took on the role of head coach for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

David White, CEO of the Unicorns, recognized Watson’s significant contributions: “Shane was a natural choice as our first head coach. His dedication over the past three seasons has been invaluable.” The franchise wishes him success in his future projects within the sport.
