Leica’s New M Camera Trades Iconic Rangefinder for Advanced EVF
Leica has introduced a significant innovation in its camera lineup with the launch of the new M EV1. This model marks the brand’s first departure from the traditional rangefinder configuration. Instead, it features a sophisticated electronic viewfinder (EVF) with an impressive resolution of 5.76 million dots.

Based on the M11-P model released in 2023, the M EV1 showcases several notable specifications:

The camera removes the rangefinder assembly, making it lighter by 46 grams compared to traditional models. Enhanced Focusing Experience
One of the standout features of the M EV1 is its capability for enhanced focusing. Users can focus directly through the lens either via the half-inch EVF or the 2.95-inch rear LCD. This live view function provides exposure previews, assists with focusing aids like focus peaking and magnification, and simplifies the use of ultrawide and telephoto lenses.
Control Accessibility
An interesting design element is the new front lever, previously a preview lever for traditional M cameras. This lever now includes two customizable function buttons, allowing users to toggle left or right to enable focus peaking and magnification. The M EV1 has also reverted to menu-based ISO control, eliminating the ISO dial first seen in the M10.
Aesthetic Changes and Market Position
The design has sparked mixed reactions. While the characteristic red dot logo remains prominently featured, the absence of the rangefinder window has led to some critique regarding the camera’s appearance. The remaining window now hosts an LED for the timer, a change that some users find jarring.
Despite the removal of the costly mechanical rangefinder, the price difference between the M EV1 and its predecessor, the M11-P, is $845. This pricing strategy may reflect Leica’s anticipation of EVF preferences among its customer base.
