Ekiti 2026: Former PDP Candidate and Supporters Join APC
In a significant political shift, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has witnessed a substantial defection. Hon. Niyi Adeogun, a former House of Assembly candidate, along with key party members, has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This move reflects a growing trend of discontent within the PDP, as Adeogun and others rally behind the economic reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
Reasons Behind the Defection
During a reception held at his Erinmope/Aaye Oja/Irare Ward in Moba Local Government, Adeogun expressed his admiration for the government’s policies. He highlighted the inclusivity of governance under Governor Oyebanji, which seeks to accommodate diverse groups, including politicians, students, women, artisans, and civil servants.
Adeogun praised the extensive rural development initiatives undertaken by the Oyebanji administration. These efforts include the reconstruction of critical infrastructure like the Erinmope-Irare road, aimed at enhancing food production and achieving food security in Ekiti. He stated, “Our economy is assuming a higher dimension in Ekiti through the strategic prosecution of the six pillars of this administration.”
Infrastructure Development in Ekiti
- Construction of major roads including:
- Ado Ekiti Ring road
- Ado-Ikere road
- Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road
- Ikere-Ilawe road
- Ikole-Ara-Isinbode road
Adeogun aims to leverage his experience to energize APC’s grassroots efforts, supporting the re-election of Governor Oyebanji in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Welcoming the New Members
The APC Chairman in Ekiti State, Hon. Sola Elesin, welcomed the new members, promising them equal treatment within the party. Representing Elesin, Hon. Kolawole Olaoluwa emphasized the need for loyalty to the party and the governor, encouraging the defectors to actively participate in the upcoming elections.
Strengthening the Party
Hon. Idowu Odebunmi, a member of the House of Assembly, remarked on the political significance of Adeogun’s move. He believes this will fortify the APC at the ward level. Odebunmi commended Governor Oyebanji for attracting significant opposition members and praised his administration’s performance.
Additionally, former commissioner Mr. Jimlas Kayode Fasae asserted that the governor’s achievements have diminished the strength of the opposition, predicting a certain victory for the APC in the 2026 elections.
