Monty Don Addresses Backlash: “I Can’t Continue Indefinitely”
Monty Don, the esteemed host of Gardeners’ World, recently addressed reactions to his comments about his future on the show. Having been a prominent figure on the beloved BBC program for over two decades, Don’s recent remarks sparked concern among his dedicated audience.
Monty Don’s Future on Gardeners’ World
In 2023, while discussing his career, Monty hinted at the possibility of stepping back before his 70th birthday. This statement led to considerable backlash from fans who were worried about losing their favorite presenter.
Reflecting on this feedback, Monty commented, “I got a bit of stick for that. I said it at the end of a very long year and I was exhausted. I can’t go on forever.” Despite this, he expressed a desire to continue, stating, “I’d be very happy to do another five years.” This sentiment was shared during an interview with The Telegraph, where Monty confirmed his commitment to remain with the show.
Contract Renewal and Future Plans
Recently, Monty Don announced he would be presenting Gardeners’ World for at least two more years, beginning January 2025. During discussions about his future on Times Radio, the 68-year-old gardening expert mentioned that the “logical thing to do” would be to eventually step away from the show.
Shifting Focus to Other Projects
Monty’s original comments pointed towards a possible transition away from the program. He values his work in television and writing and aims to preserve his energy for those ventures. “If I ever had to give up one of my commitments, it wouldn’t be writing or traveling,” he noted, indicating that Gardeners’ World might be the first to go due to its relentless pace.
Rather than retiring completely, Monty intends to focus on travel documentaries that have already taken him to gardens across various countries, including the United States, Italy, and France. He envisions a future where he can explore and document diverse gardening practices globally.
Future Considerations for the Show
Monty has even considered who might succeed him if he decides to step down. He expressed a desire for the next presenter to be female and to reflect the diversity of contemporary Britain. He noted, “The world’s changing; we need to change with it,” acknowledging the need for representation in gardening media.
Since taking over from Alan Titchmarsh in 2003, Monty has faced challenges, including a temporary withdrawal from the show due to health issues in 2008. He made a comeback in 2011 and continues to film the program from his Longmeadow garden in Herefordshire, where he lives with his wife, Sarah, whom he married in 1983. The couple has three children, including two sons and a daughter.
Monty Don is set to return to screens with Monty Don’s Spanish Gardens, followed by a new episode of Gardeners’ World on BBC Two. Fans remain hopeful for many more seasons with their beloved gardener.
