Last month marked a poignant moment in rock history as Ace Frehley performed his final concert. The legendary Kiss guitarist took the stage alongside Nashville guitarist Jeremy Asbrock, his longest-tenured bandmate. Insights from Ace Frehley’s Solo Band
Asbrock embraced the opportunity to work with Frehley, calling it a dream gig for a lifelong Kiss superfan. “Ace has influenced me since I was four years old. He paved the way for my career,” he remarked in an interview with Rolling Stone.
The Final Band Members
Frehley’s final solo band comprised talented musicians:
- Jeremy Asbrock – Lead Guitar
- Ryan Spencer Cook – Bass Guitar
- Scot Coogan – Drums
Asbrock recounted the band’s formation, highlighting the unique circumstances that brought them together. Initially playing with Gene Simmons in Australia, they were later invited by Frehley to form his band. Asbrock joined Frehley in September 2018, making him the longest-serving guitarist in Frehley’s solo lineup.
Influences and Bonds
Philip Shouse, who played bass for Frehley’s solo band from 2018 to 2022 until joining German metal band Accept, emphasized the band’s camaraderie. Together, Asbrock, Shouse, and Cook fostered a vibrant Nashville rock scene by hosting Thee Rock N Roll Residency, which attracted notable surprise guests.
Shouse fondly recalled Frehley’s sense of humor, describing him as “goofy” and “funny.” Frehley’s musical prowess also inspired Shouse, who credited him with teaching him lead guitar. “Before hearing Ace, nothing made musical sense to me,” he said.
Coping with Loss
Both musicians are grappling with the profound loss of Frehley. Asbrock reflected on Frehley’s down-to-earth nature. “He was very human, sharing vulnerable moments with me,” he noted. This genuine connection set Frehley apart from others, creating lasting memories for those who knew him.
As Frehley’s legacy continues, his impact on fans and fellow musicians remains undeniable. His spirit as the Space Ace will resonate through his timeless music and the lives he touched.
