Brighton’s Clement: First Rochester-Area Player in World Series Since 1954

Brighton native Ernie Clement is set to make history as the first Rochester-area player to compete in a World Series since 1954. The 29-year-old infielder will represent the Toronto Blue Jays as they face the Los Angeles Dodgers starting October 25. Clement’s impressive journey from local youth baseball to the Major League stage exemplifies his dedication and talent.

Ernie Clement’s Historic Achievement

Ernie Clement joins a select group of players from the Greater Rochester area to play in the World Series. Before him, only Heinie Groh (1919, 1922), Howie Krist (1943), and Johnny Antonelli (1954) achieved this milestone.

His progression from high school baseball to the major leagues began at Brighton High School, where he was recognized for his skills. “The kids in our baseball Bruins program are in awe of him,” said Jason Wasserman, the varsity baseball coach at Brighton. “Clement’s story inspires them.”

Outstanding Performance in the Postseason

Clement has been exceptional in the 2025 postseason, stepping to the plate 42 times with an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of 1.063, significantly higher than the league average of .719. His performance includes seven runs batted in and one home run, contributing to the Blue Jays’ success over the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series.

Gold Glove Nominee

Clement’s defensive skills have earned him nominations for the Gold Glove award, highlighting his versatility. He has started 89 games at third base, 60 at second base, 29 at shortstop, and 15 at first base during the season. “They ask him to move around the field and excel, which he does,” Wasserman noted.

From Brighton to the Big Leagues

Clement’s journey in baseball began at Buckland Park in Brighton. He progressed through youth leagues and joined the high school varsity team as a freshman. Coaches recognized his talent early on, voting him onto the All-Greater Rochester Team multiple times and naming him all-state three times during his high school career.

After high school, Clement played for the University of Virginia before being drafted by Cleveland in 2017. He made his Major League debut in 2021 and later joined the Blue Jays in 2023.

Coach’s Perspective

Wasserman, who has followed Clement’s career closely, commented on the rapid progression. “I have a picture from the 2014 seniors, and now here we are, 11 years later.” Wasserman expressed pride in seeing Clement reach such monumental heights in baseball.

  • World Series Begins: October 25, 2025
  • Postseason OPS: 1.063
  • Runs Batted In: 7
  • Gold Glove Nominations: Yes, for third base and utility infielder

With his remarkable talent and hard work, Ernie Clement is poised to make an impact in the World Series and inspire future generations from Rochester. His journey from local baseball to the championship stage serves as a testament to his dedication and skill.
