Lozano Apologizes After Incident; San Diego FC Prepares for Playoffs Debut

As the San Diego FC gears up for its inaugural playoffs in Major League Soccer (MLS), the team faced a challenging situation with player Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano. Following an alleged incident in the locker room during the recent match in Houston, he was temporarily separated from the squad. Lozano was substituted at halftime, and subsequently did not travel for the team’s last regular-season match against Portland.

Lozano Offers Apology

In response to the controversy, Lozano issued a public apology through his social media platforms. He expressed, “I am a passionate and competitive person who always aims to give my all for the team. Sometimes, that intensity may result in reactions that do not represent who I truly am or the respect I have for those around me.” He took responsibility for his actions and indicated his commitment to moving forward positively.

Coach’s Remarks

San Diego FC’s head coach, Mikey Varas, who is a candidate for MLS Coach of the Year, confirmed that Lozano has rejoined training and may be available for their playoff debut. “We had a situation that we are managing internally,” Varas explained during a Friday press conference. He noted that Lozano is fully integrated back into the team and filled with enthusiasm.

Playoff Debut Against Portland

San Diego FC, having concluded its first season as the leader of the Western Conference and setting multiple expansion team records, will play its first playoff match this Sunday, October 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium against the Portland Timbers. The match will be available on the MLS Season Pass.

Portland Timbers’ Playoff Performance

  • The Timbers advanced to the playoffs after defeating Real Salt Lake in the wildcard round.
  • Felipe Mora played a significant role in their success.
  • Portland is entering this match motivated after a previous 4-0 loss to San Diego.

Should the game end in a draw, regulation rules dictate that there will be no extra time; the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout. A second game is scheduled for Saturday, November 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Providence Park, where the winner will face off against the victor in the Seattle versus Minnesota match.
