Heddington Honors Remembrance with 7,000 Knitted Poppies Display
In Heddington, a stunning tribute honoring Remembrance has been unveiled. Approximately 7,000 knitted poppies have been displayed, creating a striking visual at St Andrew’s Church.
St Andrew’s Church Installation
The poppies are suspended from cargo nets on the church tower. This installation, known as the Poppy Drop, is the result of a dedicated effort by the Wiltshire group Craft and Chat. Their goal is to raise funds for the Heddington and Stockley branch of the Royal British Legion.
Community Involvement
Liz Woodlands, a local resident and contributor to the project, shared her inspiration. After seeing a similar project, she proposed the idea to the village earlier this year.
Widespread Participation
The response was overwhelming. “The idea went viral in the community,” Woodlands noted. The project encouraged participation from various places, including:
- Yorkshire
- Runcorn
- The Wirral
- Australia
All contributions came from individuals with connections to Heddington, emphasizing the project’s impact.
Project Scope and Future Plans
Woodlands mentioned that the installation outgrew initial expectations. The poppy display will remain up for several months. After this period, the poppies will be stored properly for future use.
Fundraising Efforts
Funds collected from the Poppy Drop will benefit both St Andrew’s Church and the local Royal British Legion branch. This community initiative showcases not only artistic talent but also a shared commitment to remembrance.
