Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Earns Roberto Clemente Award for Humanitarian Efforts
Mookie Betts, the shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been honored with the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in recognition of his outstanding humanitarian efforts. This award was presented to him prior to Game 3 of the World Series, held on Monday in Los Angeles. Betts received the accolade from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, alongside Clemente’s sons, Luis and Roberto.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, Betts remarked, “Life is about more than kind of what you do as far as work. It’s about how you affect people.” He emphasized the importance of positively impacting others, stating, “We live by that.” Betts was nominated for this honor due to his character, community involvement, philanthropy, and the positive contributions he makes both on and off the field.
Support from Family
Accompanied by his wife, Brianna, Betts expressed gratitude for her support. “She’s been with me every step of the way,” he said. Together, they have participated in numerous initiatives, including providing food to the homeless and assisting schools in need. Betts believes in spreading joy and helping those less fortunate.
5050 Foundation and Community Initiatives
In 2021, Betts founded the 5050 Foundation, aimed at supporting underserved youth. The foundation focuses on mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness. His outreach includes:
- Providing over $30,000 in Nike apparel to wildfire victims.
- Assisting a family whose home was destroyed in the Eaton Fire.
- Establishing an AAU basketball program in Nashville, Tennessee.
- Contributing $160,000 to combat hunger and homelessness.
Impacting Young Lives
Betts also works closely with pediatric patients at UCLA Children’s Hospital and has founded various sports programs. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Betts, stating, “To be able to balance and prioritize on-the-field performance with off-the-field impact is pretty amazing.”
