Mass Killings Feared: Thousands Trapped in Besieged Sudan City by Militia

El-Fasher, the capital of northern Darfur, is currently facing a dire humanitarian crisis. This city, approximately 800 kilometers west of Khartoum, has become a focal point for mass killings feared to occur as militia forces tighten their grip.

El-Fasher: A Crucial Hub in Northern Darfur

Located 195 kilometers from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, El-Fasher is an essential commercial and logistical center. It connects various regions, including North Kordofan and Khartoum, serving as the primary entry point for aid convoys arriving from Port Sudan.

Demographics and Displacement

El-Fasher hosts a diverse population with prominent tribal groups, including Zaghawa, Fur, and Masalit. Unfortunately, many of these communities live in displacement camps due to ongoing violence. The Arab-origin tribes are less prevalent in El-Fasher, primarily concentrated in South Darfur.

  • Main Ethnic Groups: Zaghawa, Fur, Masalit

Impact of the Ongoing Conflict

For over a year, El-Fasher has been besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to violent confrontations with the Sudanese army. These clashes have resulted in significant casualties, with hundreds reported dead.

The city is home to numerous displacement camps. Some were created more than twenty years ago during the civil war, while others emerged recently due to the current conflict. These camps accommodate individuals displaced from various parts of Darfur affected by RSF control.

International Response and Development

In 2008, the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) established its main base in El-Fasher, elevating its importance and fostering urban development. However, despite this support, the current humanitarian situation remains critical.

As reports of mass killings surface, there is an urgent need for international attention and aid to protect the trapped people in this besieged city. El-Fasher’s plight underlines the severe consequences of ongoing conflict in Sudan.
