Moldova’s New Prime Minister Urges Departure of Russian Peacekeepers from Transnistria

The new Prime Minister of Moldova, Alexander Munteanu, has highlighted key aspects of his government’s agenda, particularly regarding military presence in Transnistria. He emphasizes the need to minimize military risks associated with the region, advocating for the transformation of the current Russian-led peacekeeping mission into an international civilian observer mission.

Moldova’s Strategy for Transnistria

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing Transnistrian conflict diplomatically. Munteanu’s government aims to continue previous efforts to demilitarize the area, reinforcing Chisinau’s commitment to peaceful resolution.

Key Objectives of the New Government Program

Despite this optimistic outlook, challenges remain. Russian Ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Ozerov, cautioned that unilateral moves by the Moldovan authorities could lead to increased tensions. He highlighted that the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria hinges on a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Currently, approximately 250,000 Russian citizens reside in Transnistria, and Moscow has committed to their protection. The Moldovan military strategy for 2025-2035 identifies the presence of Russian troops as a significant threat to national security.

Demilitarization as a Precondition

Chisinau insists that complete demilitarization of the left bank of the Dniester is crucial for peaceful relations with Tiraspol. Ongoing discussions and actions reflect the Moldovan government’s intent to create a stable and peaceful environment in and around Transnistria.
