BTS’ RM Calls on World Leaders to Promote Creativity at APEC Summit

BTS leader RM made history as the first K-pop artist to address the APEC CEO Summit as a keynote speaker. His speech, delivered in English, highlighted his journey and the evolution of K-pop, urging global leaders to invest in the arts and creativity.
RM’s Reflection on BTS’ Journey
During his keynote address, RM, whose full name is Kim Nam-joon, shared insights into BTS’s struggles. He recalled their initial attempts to gain international recognition a decade ago. “BTS first started to go outside Korea about 10 years ago,” he noted, expressing how they did not envision their current success.
Cultural Barriers and Solidarity
RM discussed the challenges faced by BTS when introducing their Korean-language music to global audiences. He explained, “When we said we are artists from Korea, they didn’t ask us about our music. They asked, ‘Are you from North Korea or South Korea?’” Despite these hurdles, RM emphasized the role of their fanbase, ARMY, in overcoming barriers through cultural solidarity.
- ARMY utilized BTS’s music to foster international dialogues.
- RM compared K-pop’s diversity to bibimbap, reflecting its blend of various cultural elements.
The Essence of K-pop
According to RM, K-pop transcends being just a genre. He referred to it as a “360-degree total package” combining music, dance, and storytelling. He underlined K-pop’s inclusivity, stating that its success stems from respecting and embracing diverse cultures while maintaining Korea’s unique identity.
Cultural Impact on Diplomacy
RM transitioned to a broader discussion on the significance of culture in diplomacy and development. He likened culture to a river, flowing freely and uniting different strains. He called on APEC leaders to view cultural diversity and creativity as vital components for innovation and unity.
- RM challenged leaders to recognize creators globally.
- He urged for financial support to nurture creativity.
Investing in Arts as a Strategic Imperative
In his closing remarks, RM articulated that investing in culture goes beyond being a feel-good initiative. It is a necessity. “Culture and art are a powerful force that moves hearts,” he declared, encouraging APEC leaders to create supportive policies for artists.
RM concluded with a commitment to contribute meaningfully in the cultural landscape. He promised to send a message of hope and unity through music, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to make the world a better place.
