Mike Vrabel Discusses Patriots’ Trades of Kyle Dugger, Keion White
The New England Patriots made significant roster changes ahead of the NFL trade deadline by trading defenders Keion White and Kyle Dugger. Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed these trades during a recent press conference, emphasizing that the timing played a crucial role in the decision-making process.
Mike Vrabel Discusses Patriots’ Trades of Kyle Dugger and Keion White
Vrabel stated, “I think that with just the timing of everything and where we’re at as a team, we felt like it was the right thing to do.” He mentioned the intention to focus on the upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, a team the Patriots have not played in several years.
Details of the Trades
The Patriots executed two trades involving Kyle Dugger and Keion White:
- Kyle Dugger was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers along with a 2026 seventh-round draft pick. In return, the Patriots received a 2026 sixth-round draft pick.
- Keion White was sent to the San Francisco 49ers, also with a 2026 seventh-round pick. The Patriots acquired a 2026 sixth-round pick in this deal as well.
Despite their past contributions, both players had seen reduced playing time in the team’s new defensive setup. White notably was a healthy scratch in the recent game against the Cleveland Browns.
Options for Depth
With these trades, the Patriots are actively seeking new options for depth at defensive positions. Current alternatives at safety include Dell Pettus and newly signed John Saunders Jr. Additionally, Richie Grant, who was elevated from the practice squad, adds to the safety options. On the edge, Anfernee Jennings, Elijah Ponder, and recent acquisition Caleb Murphy offer depth.
Vrabel highlighted the importance of preparation across all roster spots, stating, “We ask everybody to prepare as a starter, whether they’re on the practice squad or they’re on the active roster.” He stressed that every player will be needed as the season progresses.
Looking Ahead to the Draft
As the trade deadline approaches, the Patriots might pursue further adjustments. Currently, they hold ten picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, including four sixth-round selections. This abundance of resources provides flexibility for potential roster enhancements.
