Explore the Grand Egyptian Museum: Cairo’s Monumental Masterpiece
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is set to officially open, marking a historic event for Cairo and Egypt as a whole. This museum stands as the largest in the world dedicated solely to Ancient Egyptian civilization. Featuring over 100,000 artefacts, it includes treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb and Khufu’s renowned ‘solar boat’.
Visitors and Exhibitions
Guests will enter through the Grand Hall and the Grand Staircase. These impressive spaces are adorned with enormous columns bearing hieroglyphs and monumental pharaonic statues. Ahead lie the Main Galleries, which were previewed in October 2024 for a select group of 4,000 visitors.
On November 1, 2025, the final phase will unveil the Tutankhamun Galleries. This section will exhibit over 5,000 artefacts from the tomb of the young pharaoh. The dazzling gold funerary mask and lifelike statues are among the standout pieces that dignitaries from around the globe will admire during the inauguration.
Public Access and Admission Fees
The GEM will open to the public on November 4, with an entrance fee of 1,450 Egyptian pounds (approximately €30) for adult foreign visitors. With a total exhibition space of 22,000 square meters, this museum promises an enriching experience for all who enter.
Extensive Conservation Facilities
One of the GEM’s highlights is its comprehensive conservation and research facilities. An underground tunnel links the main building to 19 specialized laboratories committed to preserving Ancient Egyptian heritage. These facilities focus on protecting fragile items such as papyri and human remains.
Architectural Innovation
The museum’s architectural design, crafted by Irish architect Roisin Heneghan, harmoniously blends history with modernity. The structure pays tribute to ancient forms, incorporating triangles and pyramids, while also embracing scientific innovations. For instance, the use of reinforced concrete helps regulate internal temperatures, minimizing air conditioning needs.
Additionally, the museum’s gardens, designed by landscape architects West 8, draw inspiration from the lush vegetation of the Nile Valley, featuring triangular shapes to echo the museum’s design.
Expected Visitor Traffic
