Elders Minister Caroline Proulx Paralyzed by Mother’s Traumatic Death
Caroline Proulx, the Minister for Seniors in Quebec, faced an emotional crisis following the traumatic death of her mother. On December 31, she discovered her mother unresponsive at the bottom of a staircase, a scene that left her devastated. Proulx described the moment as “paralyzing,” adding, “I felt completely guilty for not being able to help my mother.”
Impact of Trauma on Minister Proulx
Following her mother’s death, which resulted from a fall causing a traumatic brain injury, Proulx found it challenging to continue her responsibilities in government. In a recent interview, she revealed how this tragedy affected her emotional stability, particularly at work.
Emotional Breakdown in Public
During her first meeting with colleagues after a cabinet reshuffle, Proulx struggled to contain her emotions, crying unexpectedly as she introduced herself. “I felt overwhelmed and questioned what was happening to me,” she recalled.
Days later, at a palliative care home in Quebec, she faced another emotional challenge while addressing an audience of approximately 200 people. “I had to stop and ask my bodyguard, ‘What is wrong with me?’” she shared.
Further Struggles and Realizations
During an inauguration of a seniors’ residence in Gatineau, Proulx completely broke down after previously feeling intense emotions during visits with elderly individuals. “I felt a wave of intensity, and I became frustrated with myself for not being able to control it,” she admitted.
Recognizing the Need for Healing
Following these incidents, Proulx recognized her need for a break to process her grief and begin healing from her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding her condition marked a significant step forward. “It reassured me to realize that I’m not crazy,” she noted.
Proulx’s experiences demonstrate the profound impact of personal trauma on one’s professional life, especially in positions of responsibility. Her journey highlights the necessity of mental health awareness and support for those dealing with similar circumstances.
