NYC Storms: Heavy Rain and Winds Disrupt Transit, Cause Damage in NJ

Recent storms have swept through the Tri-State area, resulting in significant disruptions and damage. Strong winds and heavy rains have led to power outages, downed trees, and transit complications, with officials issuing ongoing weather alerts.
Storm Impact Overview
On Thursday, severe weather conditions affected multiple locations, particularly airports and transit systems. Newark Liberty International, JFK, and LaGuardia airports experienced ground stops due to the high winds.
Transit Disruptions
New Jersey Transit faced significant impacts, especially on the North Jersey Coast Line. Service was temporarily halted following a tree falling on power lines near Woodbridge, New Jersey. Although service has resumed in both directions between Penn Station in New York and Long Branch stations, travelers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes. NJ Transit is currently cross-honoring rail tickets and passes with private carrier buses and PATH at Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street in New York.
Vehicle Restrictions on MTA Bridges and Tunnels
The MTA announced vehicle restrictions on several bridges and tunnels due to the inclement weather. The current prohibitions include:
- Cross Bay Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks; shared use path closed.
- Marine Parkway Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks; shared use path closed.
- Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: Ban on all tractor trailers, tandem trucks, cars with trailers, minibuses, motorcycles, and any vehicle deemed a safety hazard.
- Throgs Neck Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks.
Damage Reports
In Yonkers, a tree fell on a closed porch on Rockland Avenue, causing damage to the structure. Additional reports indicate downed live wires at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 86th Street in the Rockaways. Similarly, a tree fell across East 230th Street at Lowerre Place in the Bronx, while numerous trees blocked roads in areas such as Corona and Flushing, Queens.
The recent storms have made travel and power supply difficult across the region. Residents are urged to exercise caution and stay updated with local authorities for current information and alerts.
