GOP Lawmaker Backs Cuomo, Calls Mamdani ‘Communist’

In a surprising turn of events, a prominent Republican lawmaker has endorsed former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race. This endorsement aims to challenge Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani as the election approaches.

Republican Lawmaker’s Endorsement

Rep. Nick Langworthy, a member of the House and former chair of the New York State Republican Party, expressed his support for Cuomo. He stated that backing Cuomo was a “no-brainer” given the stakes involved. Langworthy underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that one candidate could realistically win. He mentioned polling indicating Cuomo trailing by 10 points but still considered him a viable option.

Concerns Over Mamdani

Langworthy articulated his concern over Mamdani, labeling the Democratic nominee as “communist.” He remarked on the importance of preventing Mamdani from succeeding in the mayoral race. Langworthy noted, “I’ve had plenty of disagreements with Gov. Cuomo. But there’s no doubt he would be a far superior mayor than a communist.”

Other Republicans in New York have also rallied behind Cuomo in the final days before the election. Early voting commenced last weekend, setting the stage for a competitive election.

Mamdani is considered the frontrunner in a traditionally Democratic stronghold. In contrast, Cuomo is running as an independent candidate, with Curtis Sliwa representing the Republican Party.
