LSU Athletics Unveils New Department Leadership Transition

LSU Athletics has announced a leadership transition, parting ways with Director of Athletics Scott Woodward effective immediately. This decision was made public on Thursday, marking the end of Woodward’s tenure that began in April 2019.

Scott Ballard, the Chair of the Board of Supervisors, expressed gratitude for Woodward’s six years of service. He acknowledged Woodward’s success and wished him well in future endeavors. Following this transition, Verge Ausberry will step in as the Interim Director of Athletics.

Interim Director: Verge Ausberry Steps Up

Ausberry, a native of New Iberia and an LSU alumnus, has a long history with the university. He has been associated with Louisiana State University since 1991 in various capacities. His new role as Interim Director includes overseeing the athletic department and leading the search for the next head football coach.

• Background: Ausberry earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1990.
• Advanced Degrees: He completed a Master of Education in 1992 and a Specialist in Higher Education Administration in 2004.
• Career: Ausberry joined LSU as a compliance intern in 1991 and has served in several areas over his 30-plus year career.
• Notable Roles: Promoted to Executive Deputy Athletic Director in 2019, he also oversees external relations.

In his new role, Ausberry emphasized a firm commitment to advancing the athletic department. He stated, “It’s my responsibility to move this athletic department forward.” He aims to recruit the best football coach to lead the program and ensure a superior experience for student-athletes.

Ausberry has a deep personal connection to LSU, having arrived as a student-athlete in 1985. He is married to Cheri Morial, and they have two sons, both Division I football athletes. Their son, Austin, is currently a redshirt junior safety at LSU.
