Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt Faces Season-Ending Surgery, Says Kenny Dillingham

Arizona State University’s starting quarterback Sam Leavitt will undergo surgery that will end his season, according to head coach Kenny Dillingham. This announcement was made during an interview on Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta.
Leavitt’s Injury Background
Leavitt had been in a walking boot prior to the announcement and was already ruled out for the upcoming game against Iowa State. The injury occurred during a victory over Baylor on September 20. Throughout the season, the foot injury did not improve as hoped. Leavitt managed to play against TCU but missed a game against Utah before returning for contests against Texas Tech and Houston.
Coaching Perspective
Dillingham described Leavitt as a determined competitor. “This is the worst news he wanted to hear because it means he can’t play football,” Dillingham said. “He loves the game and this place, so it’s definitely unfortunate for him.”
Impact on the Team
- Sixth-year senior Jeff Sims will start in place of Leavitt.
- Cam Dyer will step in as the backup quarterback.
- Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is also injured and is doubtful for the Iowa State game.
Arizona State is currently dealing with multiple injuries. As of now, they hold a record of 5-3, with a 3-2 standing in conference play, recently facing a loss against Houston.
Leavitt’s Performance
In the 2024 season, Sam Leavitt completed 60.7% of his passes, throwing for 1,628 yards along with ten touchdowns and three interceptions. He also contributed significantly in rushing, with 306 yards and five touchdowns over 73 carries. Leavitt transferred to ASU from Michigan State before the season, helping the Sun Devils reach the College Football Playoff last year.
Future Considerations
As Leavitt is eligible for the NFL Draft, speculation arises regarding whether he has played his final game for ASU. Dillingham stated he hasn’t discussed future steps with Leavitt, emphasizing his disappointment over the quarterback’s injuries this season.
Upcoming Schedule
The Sun Devils will be looking to regroup as they have three regular-season games remaining after the Iowa State match. Their opponents will include:
- West Virginia
- Colorado
- Arizona
The matchup against Iowa State is significant as it marks a rematch in the Big 12 title game. The kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. MST, broadcasted on 98.7 FM and the Arizona Sports app.
