ASU QB Leavitt Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
Arizona State’s starting quarterback, Sam Leavitt, is set to undergo season-ending surgery due to a persistent foot injury. This announcement was made by head coach Kenny Dillingham, who revealed that Leavitt would not travel with the team for their upcoming matchup against Iowa State.
Details of Sam Leavitt’s Injury
Leavitt incurred the injury on September 20 during a game against Baylor. Since then, he has struggled with foot issues, impacting his performance and availability. Despite playing in last week’s game against Houston, where he completed 18 of 35 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, he exited in the fourth quarter, leading to concerns about his condition.
Season Statistics
- Passing Yards: 1,628
- Touchdowns: 10
- Interceptions: 3
The injury has severely affected Leavitt’s effectiveness throughout the season. Coach Dillingham noted that the issue had been ongoing and required reevaluation. “It’s definitely something that’s been lingering all year,” Dillingham stated.
Impact on Arizona State’s Season
Leavitt was critical in leading Arizona State to its first Big 12 title and College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. His previous performance included passing for 2,885 yards, with 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions, reinforcing his status as a top quarterback and potential NFL draft prospect.
With Leavitt sidelined, senior quarterback Jeff Sims will step in for the Iowa State game. Sims previously played against Utah, where he completed 18 of 38 passes for 124 yards. He brings experience from his time at both Nebraska and Georgia Tech.
Team’s Injury Concerns
Arizona State is facing multiple injury issues ahead of the game against Iowa State. Key players unavailable include:
- Center: Ben Coleman
- Safety: Xavion Alford
- Wide Receiver: Jordyn Tyson (Doubtful due to hamstring injury)
As the Sun Devils prepare for the game, the focus will be on how to navigate these challenges while maintaining a competitive edge in the Big 12.
