RBI Reports Rs 5,817 Crore in Unreturned Rs 2,000 Notes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that approximately Rs 5,817 crore in Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes remains unreturned as of October 31, 2025. The RBI announced the withdrawal of these high-value notes on May 19, 2023, but they continue to hold their status as legal tender.

Details on Rs 2,000 Notes Withdrawal

When the withdrawal was initially announced, the total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Since then, a significant portion has been returned, with the RBI stating that 98.37 percent of the currency has already been deposited back into the banking system.

Exchange and Deposit Facilities

  • The exchange facility for Rs 2,000 banknotes has been available at 19 RBI issue offices since the withdrawal announcement.
  • As of October 9, 2023, individuals and entities can deposit these notes into their bank accounts at RBI offices.
  • Public users can also send Rs 2,000 notes through India Post to any RBI office for credit into their accounts.
