Ontario Offers Free Flu, COVID-19, and RSV Vaccines to More Residents
The Ontario government has announced a program offering free vaccinations for residents against flu, COVID-19, and RSV as the respiratory illness season approaches. This initiative is part of a comprehensive immunization effort aimed at protecting individuals and communities across the province.
Free Vaccines Available to Residents
Residents aged six months and older can receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines at various locations, including:
- Participating pharmacies
- Public health units
- Primary care providers, such as doctors and nurse practitioners
Health Benefits of Immunization
Sylvia Jones, Minister of Health, emphasized that vaccination is a crucial step to shield oneself and the community during the respiratory illness season. She stated, “Getting immunized is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and our communities.”
Receiving both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously is not only safe but also recommended to minimize healthcare visits.
RSV Vaccines for Vulnerable Groups
Additionally, free RSV immunizations, specifically Abrysvo or Arexvy, are now available. These are advised for:
- Individuals aged 75 and older
- High-risk adults aged 60 and over, particularly those residing in long-term care or retirement homes
- Infants under eight months old born on or after April 1
- High-risk children under 24 months of age
- Pregnant women, with the option to receive the RSV vaccine Abrysvo to help protect their infants at birth
Eligible newborns, infants, and high-risk children can also access the Beyfortus immunization.
Importance of Staying Updated
Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health, remarked on the significance of immunization as a preventive measure against serious illnesses and hospitalizations. He encouraged residents to take advantage of the free vaccines, stating, “Getting your flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines, if eligible, this fall is safe, convenient, and helps protect our most vulnerable populations.”
Immunizations provided under Ontario’s routine schedule are free for those who meet the eligibility criteria. Residents uncertain about their vaccination status or eligibility should consult a healthcare provider or local public health unit.
For optimal protection against circulating respiratory illnesses, it is advisable to receive the COVID-19 and flu vaccines annually in the fall.
