Dodgers Victory Sparks Star-Studded LACMA Art + Film Gala
Los Angeles was ablaze with excitement as the Dodgers clinched the World Series during the 14th annual Art + Film Gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday. Attendees ranged from celebrities to local officials, all gathered to honor artist Mary Corse and filmmaker Ryan Coogler.
Dodgers’ Victory Enhances Gala Atmosphere
The gala began while the Dodgers were down against the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the mood shifted dramatically when Miguel Rojas hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, leading to cheers throughout the venue. LACMA director Michael Govan humorously declared, “Go Dodgers!” before commencing the tributes to the honorees.
This year’s gala raised a record-breaking $6.5 million, providing crucial support for the museum and its various programs. Govan highlighted the unique blend of art and film in Los Angeles, stating, “This is a celebration that can only happen in L.A. — where art, film, and creativity are deeply intertwined.”
Celebrity Guests and Notable Attendees
The event attracted a star-studded lineup, co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio and LACMA trustee Eva Chow. Notable attendees included:
- Dustin Hoffman
- Cynthia Erivo
- Cindy Crawford
- Queen Latifah
- Angela Bassett
- Doja Cat
Local political figures also attended, including U.S. Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove and L.A. County Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Lindsey Horvath. Kristin Sakoda, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, praised the diverse cultural representation present at the gala.
Tributes and Future of LACMA
Acknowledging previous gala honorees, Govan mentioned notable artists like Mark Bradford and George Lucas in attendance. He emphasized the anticipation surrounding LACMA’s upcoming David Geffen Galleries, set to open in April, which will house the museum’s 150,000-object collection.
Highlighting the importance of support, Govan thanked David Geffen and the late Elaine Wynn, whose $50 million contribution played a crucial role in the new development. The north wing of the building will be named in honor of Wynn.
Unions and Community Spirit
While the festive atmosphere prevailed, there was subtle acknowledgment of the recent announcement regarding the formation of a union representing over 300 LACMA employees. Despite the significant moment for workers, the gala remained focused on community and collaboration. Yaroslavsky noted, “It was a beautiful evening of community coming together, reminding us of our shared humanity.”
The gala culminated in an electrifying performance by Doja Cat, solidifying the event as a harmonious blend of culture and celebration in Los Angeles.
