Seoul Issues First Cold Wave Alert, Chilly Until Tomorrow Morning
Seoul has officially issued its first cold wave alert following a significant drop in temperatures overnight. This alert affects not only the capital but also various inland regions.
Significant Temperature Drop Across South Korea
This morning, South Korea experienced its coldest weather of the autumn season. Many areas saw temperatures plummet by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day. This drastic change is attributed to a strong continental high-pressure system, bringing frigid air from the upper atmosphere, clocking in at below -20 degrees Celsius.
Temperature Records
- Muju, Jeollabuk-do: -8.7°C (feels like -17.5°C)
- Paju, Gyeonggi-do: -3.8°C
- Cheorwon, Gangwon-do: -3.0°C
- Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do: -2.8°C
- Seoul: Lowest recorded at 0.5°C
Although Seoul’s official temperature did not drop below freezing, some districts, such as Eunpyeong and Nowon, reported temperatures below -2°C, making this morning particularly brisk.
Forecast and Health Advisory
The cold weather is expected to persist until tomorrow morning. Today, Seoul’s high will reach 13°C, keeping the overall chill intact. Tomorrow morning’s forecast indicates Paju at 1°C and Seoul at 5°C, still relatively cold.
However, temperatures are anticipated to rebound to seasonal averages after tomorrow, which should alleviate the persistent cold front. Residents are advised to take extra care of their health as this cold wave comes with considerable temperature fluctuations, characteristic of early winter.
