‘Welcome to Derry’ Creator Discusses Strike’s Effect on Filming

“IT: Welcome to Derry” has made a strong debut on HBO, marking a much-anticipated return following significant production delays. The Hollywood strikes of 2023 forced a prolonged pause in filming, halting production for eight months.

Impact of the Strikes on Filming

Co-creator Barbara Muschietti revealed that prior to the shutdown, approximately 90% of three episodes had been filmed. However, the unexpected halt presented numerous logistical challenges for the show’s narrative.

“We suddenly had to work in different seasons,” Muschietti shared in an interview with SFX Magazine. “This is a summer show, but suddenly it wasn’t a summer show anymore. We had to create a different finale with a different climate.”

Challenges Faced During Production Delay

  • Growing cast: The young actors experienced significant changes in their voices and appearances.
  • Complicated schedules: The actors’ availability became increasingly difficult to coordinate.
  • Studio adjustments: The production team faced numerous challenges to accommodate these changes.

Muschietti expressed her support for the writers and actors affected by the strikes. However, she acknowledged the difficulties posed for those already in the filming process, labeling the situation as “complicated.”

Viewership and Future Episodes

Following its premiere, “IT: Welcome to Derry” attracted 5.7 million viewers in the United States within the first three days. In a special move, the second episode was released early to coincide with Halloween celebrations.

Fans can look forward to new episodes airing every Sunday at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max, culminating in the season finale scheduled for December 14.
