Former Michigan Defensive Coordinator Appointed Interim Coach at Auburn
In a significant change for the Auburn football program, former Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin has been appointed as interim head coach. This decision follows the firing of head coach Hugh Freeze, announced by the athletic director, John Cohen.
D.J. Durkin’s New Role at Auburn
Durkin takes over the leadership of the Tigers after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Under his guidance, the Auburn defense has excelled, ranking among the top four teams in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for both points and yards allowed.
Context of the Coaching Change
Auburn recently suffered a disappointing loss to Kentucky, falling 10-3 and dropping their season record to 4-5. Cohen expressed gratitude for Freeze’s efforts over the last three years but emphasized the need for a leadership change to meet the program’s championship aspirations.
Durkin’s Coaching Background
D.J. Durkin, 47, has a complex coaching history. His last head coaching position was at Maryland from 2016 to 2018, which ended amid investigations related to the culture and practices of the program following the tragic death of player Jordan McNair.
- 2015: Served as defensive coordinator at Michigan, allowing just 16.4 points per game.
 - 2020-2021: Held the position of defensive coordinator at Ole Miss.
 - 2022-2023: Continued as defensive coordinator at Texas A&M.
 - 2023: Hired by Freeze at Auburn before the current season.

Upcoming Challenges
Durkin’s first game as interim head coach will be against Vanderbilt this Saturday. The Tigers aim to secure two more victories to qualify for bowl eligibility this season. This transition marks a critical juncture for Auburn Football as they search for a permanent head coach to lead the program into the future.
