Daniel Day-Lewis Counters Brian Cox’s Criticisms of Method Acting
Daniel Day-Lewis has recently addressed the criticisms surrounding Method acting made by fellow actor Brian Cox. In a discussion with the U.K.’s Big Issue, Day-Lewis expressed that Cox’s remarks have drawn him into an unwanted debate on the subject. He noted that Cox has openly criticized Method acting in several interviews, often referencing Jeremy Strong, his “Succession” co-star, as an example of its negative aspects.
Day-Lewis Responds to Cox’s Critique
Brian Cox had previously speculated that Day-Lewis had to take a break from acting at the age of 55 due to the burnout associated with Method acting. In response, Day-Lewis remarked, “I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently.” He praised Cox as a talented actor but suggested he should be more open to dialogue.
In another conversation with Variety, Cox linked Strong’s Method approach to Day-Lewis, mentioning that Strong had previously been Day-Lewis’ assistant. However, Day-Lewis disagreed with this connection, asserting, “If I thought during our work together I’d interfered with his working process, I’d be appalled.” He expressed no responsibility for Strong’s acting choices.
Misrepresentation of Method Acting
Day-Lewis also expressed frustration over the misrepresentation of Method acting. He stated, “I can’t think of a single commentator who’s gobbed off about the Method that has any understanding of how it works.” He highlighted that the focus on extreme examples, such as living in a jail cell, overshadow more important aspects of the acting process.
According to Day-Lewis, Method acting aims to create a genuine presence and connection among actors. He asserted, “It’s very simple. So it pisses me off this whole ‘Oh, he went full Method’ thing.” He emphasized that his approach is dedicated to authenticity rather than theatrics.
Jeremy Strong’s Perspective
Jeremy Strong, featured on the cover of GQ in February 2023, responded to Cox’s comments regarding his Method acting. He acknowledged the diversity of opinions but defended his method, stating, “There wasn’t a flicker of doubt about that.” Strong indicated that he would remain committed to his approach, which he believes does not negatively affect his peers.
Day-Lewis’ Return to Acting
Daniel Day-Lewis, a three-time Oscar winner, has returned to the spotlight to promote his new film “Anemone.” This film marks his first role since 2017’s “Phantom Thread.” Throughout his press tour, Day-Lewis has consistently defended Method acting, emphasizing that its recent critiques often stem from a lack of understanding.
He stated, “All the recent commentary… is invariably from people who have little or no understanding of what it actually involves.” Day-Lewis sees Method acting as a tool for spontaneity and genuine interaction during performances, reinforcing the art form’s complexity.
