Gov. Hochul Endorses Sharon Owens in Syracuse Mayor Race

In Syracuse, New York, Democratic mayoral candidate Sharon Owens recently secured a pivotal endorsement from Governor Kathy Hochul. This endorsement, announced close to the weekend, marks a significant moment in Owens’ campaign as Hochul is the highest-ranking official to support her.

Governor Hochul’s Support

Governor Hochul emphasized her endorsement stems from Owens’ positions on crucial issues. These include crime reduction, affordable housing, and youth advocacy. Hochul highlighted the importance of unified party efforts, stating, “We’ve always been the backbone of our party.” She believes that mobilizing for these local elections is essential for maintaining strong leadership in Syracuse and Onondaga County.

Historic Significance of Owens’ Candidacy

If elected, Sharon Owens would become the first Black mayor in Syracuse’s history. She would also be only the second woman to hold this office, following former Mayor Stephanie Miner, who served from 2010 to 2018.

Upcoming Elections and Challenges

Owens and Hochul are focusing on the upcoming 2026 Mid-Term Elections as a key priority for Democrats. Many congressional seats are to be contested next year, with Republicans currently holding both the House and Senate. Owens said, “Local races are so important,” stressing the need for leaders who represent the community rather than individual interests.

Current Race Dynamics

In the race for Syracuse mayor, Owens stands as the frontrunner. She faces stiff competition from Republican candidate Tom Bablion and independents Alfonso Davis and Tim Rudd. The 2025 General Election is scheduled for November 4.
