SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Attracts First Applicant from $2 Billion Floriculture Sector

The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) has reached a significant milestone. Florverde® Sustainable Flowers (FSF) is the inaugural certification scheme to apply for benchmarking against the SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Criteria. This marks an important step in the SSCI’s mission to enhance sustainability standards globally.

Key Developments in Sustainable Floriculture

This application reflects an essential achievement for both FSF and the SSCI community. It illustrates a growing alignment within the industry towards a comprehensive sustainability framework that encompasses both social and environmental responsibility. Currently, more than 7,000 hectares across Colombia and Ecuador are certified under FSF. Additionally, grower groups in Nicaragua and Peru are preparing to initiate the certification process.

Floriculture Industry Growth

The floriculture sector, valued at over $55 billion, is expanding rapidly. FSF’s leadership serves as a prime example of integrating environmental and social performance in this growth. Didier Bergeret, Director of Sustainability at CGF, expressed, “This is a breakthrough moment for the SSCI.” He highlighted how welcoming the first applicant under the environmental benchmark solidifies the SSCI’s role in helping companies address all facets of sustainability.

Florverde’s Commitment to Sustainability

Having already attained SSCI recognition for its social compliance benchmark, Florverde aims to secure environmental recognition. Daniela España, Director of FSF, commented on the significance of this dual recognition: “We are proud to be the first certification scheme in the floriculture industry to apply for this benchmark.” She emphasized the importance of initiatives like SSCI that foster trust and transparency throughout the floriculture value chain.

SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Criteria

The SSCI’s Environmental Benchmark Criteria are developed through multi-stakeholder consultation. These criteria will be applicable to various schemes in Manufacturing & Processing, Primary Production, and Forestry sectors. They define the minimum requirements for environmental sustainability within the industry.

Application Process for Recognition

Auditing, monitoring, and certification programs are encouraged to apply for SSCI recognition. This process allows them to demonstrate their dedication to meeting industry-established standards for social and environmental responsibility.
