Heavy Rain Floods Carmarthenshire, Trapping Dogs in Rescue Centre

Recent heavy rains have led to severe flooding in Carmarthenshire, trapping dogs at a local rescue center. The extreme weather has cut off access to the property for the 12th time since July. The sanctuary’s 37 dogs are currently in a precarious situation.

Impact of the Flooding

On Tuesday, as water levels rapidly rose, sanctuary owner Ms. Clark, 59, attempted to evacuate the dogs. She reported that rescue efforts were complicated as “every level we went up, the water followed.” Despite the challenges, the fire and rescue service managed to help nine dogs escape using boats.

Conditions at the Sanctuary

Unfortunately, many dogs had to be left behind due to their reactive nature, making relocation difficult. The remaining dogs are confined to crates in the loft, lacking access to food or bathroom facilities. The flooding has devastated the sanctuary’s supplies, leaving only two bags of dog food.

  • No road access due to flooding.
  • Approximately 37 dogs currently at the sanctuary.
  • Only two bags of dog food remaining.
  • Previous flooding incidents: 12 since July.

The situation is dire, with no electricity available and bedding for the dogs completely soaked. Ms. Clark described herself as feeling “just broken” under these circumstances. She has never witnessed such a level of impact in her 25 years of operating the sanctuary.

Plans for the Future

Amidst the chaos, Ms. Clark remains determined to improve conditions for the dogs. She aims to build proper kennels in the loft to enhance their living situation after the floodwaters recede. Today, her primary focus is on finding clean bedding and salvaging any available food for the dogs.
