Tigers Strengthen Team with New Coaching Hires

The Detroit Tigers have made significant changes to their coaching staff and front office, announcing new hires that aim to bolster team performance. On Wednesday, the organization introduced three new coaches, marking a strategic shift for the upcoming season.

Tigers’ New Coaching Staff

Cody Asche and Anthony Sanders are joining the Tigers after previously working with the Baltimore Orioles. Asche takes on the role of assistant hitting coach, while Sanders will serve as the first base coach.

Cody Asche: Assistant Hitting Coach

Cody Asche, who has a background as a professional player until 2019, began his coaching career in 2021 with the Philadelphia organization. The Phillies selected him in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. He transitioned to the Orioles as a minor league hitting coach in 2022 and was promoted to the major league staff in 2023 as an offensive strategy coach. Asche steps in to replace Keith Beauregard, whose contract expired after the last season.

Anthony Sanders: First Base Coach

Sanders has been the first base coach for the Orioles since 2020, following various coaching positions at the minor league level, including a successful tenure as Pioneer League Manager of the Year in 2014. He will take over from Anthony Iapoce, who held the same role for the previous two years.

Billy Boyer: Quality Coach

Billy Boyer has been promoted to major league quality coach after serving as the minor league field coordinator for the Tigers last season. This marks Boyer’s second term with the team, having previously worked as their infield coordinator in 2022 before a stint with the University of Washington in 2023.

Front Office Appointments

In addition to the coaching changes, the Tigers have reshuffled their front office. Dr. Georgia Giblin has been elevated to Vice President of Health & Performance, a position she has prepared for over five years within the organization.

  • Alex Smith: Named Vice President of Baseball Strategy after his work as the strategy coach for the Cubs last season.
  • Christian Hook: Promoted to Director of Pitching Evaluation, having joined the Tigers in 2022.
  • Brad Ciolek: Appointed Director of International Scouting, bringing experience from the Nationals and previously from the Orioles.
  • Tom Moore: Transitioned to Senior Advisor for International Operations.
  • Theo Hooper: Newly appointed Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting, moving from a staff assistant role with the Rangers.

These changes signify the Tigers’ commitment to improving their performance on and off the field as they prepare for the upcoming season. The team aims to leverage this new talent to create a more competitive environment in the Major Leagues.
