Malta Achieves 12th Place in World Justice Project’s Safest Countries Index

Malta has achieved an impressive ranking as the 12th safest country in the world according to the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index. The country has experienced a significant decline in crime rates, dropping from 46 incidents per 1,000 people in 2004 to 30 cases per 1,000 people today, with expectations of further reductions in 2024.

Commitment to Security and Trust

Minister Byron Camilleri emphasized the importance of security as more than just law enforcement; it also pertains to the trust between citizens and their protective services. He stated, “A Safe Malta. A Malta that gives you peace of mind.” This reflects the government’s dedication to providing a secure environment for all residents.

Funding and Investment in the Security Sector

Looking forward to 2026, a substantial increase in funding for the security sector has been announced. The recurrent budget for security will rise from €100 million in 2012 to €280 million by 2026. Camilleri stressed the importance of investing in personnel alongside physical resources.

  • €6 million for modernizing police information systems.
  • €9 million allocated for new police stations in:
    • Paola
    • Mosta
    • Sliema
    • Qormi
    • Rabat (Gozo)
  • Upgrading police vehicle fleet and enhancing security camera coverage in strategic locations, such as Buġibba, Marsa, and Paola.
  • New firefighting vehicles for the Civil Protection Department and improvements to existing stations.

Future Agreements for Personnel

The government is also focused on improving conditions for members of the disciplined forces through new sectoral agreements. Following agreements for police, soldiers, and correctional service personnel, a new agreement for the Civil Protection Department is anticipated this year.

Economic Growth and Family Support

Minister Camilleri concluded his remarks by highlighting that Malta’s robust economic performance enables the government to invest in families and future generations. “We can talk about the future because it is our policy to translate a strong economy into our families, into the future of our children,” he stated.

Malta’s advancements in security and commitment to a safer environment underscore its growing reputation as one of the safest countries globally.
