Giants Test Rookie Kicker Ben Sauls Amid Graham Gano Doubts
The New York Giants are scrutinizing their options for a placekicker as uncertainty surrounds veteran Graham Gano’s health. On Thursday, the team held a tryout for rookie kicker Ben Sauls.
Giants Evaluate Rookie Kicker Ben Sauls
Graham Gano, 38, is facing a herniated disc in his neck. This injury raises doubts about his ability to play in the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears.
Background on Ben Sauls
Ben Sauls had a college career at the University of Pittsburgh. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the 2025 NFL Draft but was released during the preseason. Subsequently, Sauls joined the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in September. Unfortunately, he was also cut by Atlanta earlier this week.
Current Kicking Situation
- If Gano is unable to kick on Sunday, Younghoe Koo will take his place.
- Koo has been on the Giants’ practice squad since Gano’s groin injury in Week 3.
- Gano had to serve a month on injured reserve due to this injury.
- Jude McAtamney initially filled in for Gano but struggled, missing three extra points in two weeks.
- McAtamney has since returned to the practice squad after Gano’s recovery.
Sauls’ Performance Statistics
During his college career, Sauls showed impressive numbers. He converted 52 of 64 field goal attempts, achieving an accuracy rate of 81.3%. Moreover, he made 122 of 124 extra points, reflecting a remarkable 98.4% success rate. In 2024, he notably made six out of seven field goals from beyond 50 yards.
As the Giants navigate this uncertain kicking situation, the addition of rookie Ben Sauls could provide crucial insurance for their upcoming games.
