Red Raiders’ Bailey and Rodriguez Named National Award Semifinalists

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are gaining recognition on a national level, particularly for their defensive prowess. Edge defender David Bailey and linebacker Jacob Rodriguez have emerged as semifinalists for prestigious college football awards, underscoring a defense that ranks among the best in the nation for the 2025 season.

National Awards Semifinalists

On November 4, 2025, it was announced that both players secured their spots as semifinalists for the Lombardi Award. This award honors the top lineman or linebacker in college football. Established in 1970, it pays tribute to legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi by recognizing attributes like excellence, leadership, and toughness.

  • David Bailey and Jacob Rodriguez are among 13 candidates for the Lombardi Award.
  • Rodriguez is also one of 12 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, awarded annually to the best linebacker in college football.

Defensive Impact

The Red Raiders are now one of only two programs, alongside Ohio State, with multiple Lombardi semifinalists. This achievement highlights the elite status of Texas Tech’s defense this season. Bailey, who transferred from Stanford, leads the entire FBS with 11.5 sacks. He has also recorded 27 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, and two forced fumbles.

Rodriguez, in his fifth year, is experiencing the best season of his college career. He leads the FBS with seven forced fumbles, just one shy of the Texas Tech single-season record of eight, set by safety Dwayne Slay in 2005. His performance also includes 77 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery.

Coaching Praise

Kenny Perry, the associate head coach, spoke highly of both players during a press conference on the same day as the awards announcement. He emphasized their critical roles in transforming the team’s dynamic, stating, “We’re in the situation we’re in because of them two.”

Red Raiders’ Season Overview

The Red Raiders currently hold an 8-1 overall record and are 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference. They rank first in the FBS for rushing defense, fifth in scoring defense, and tenth in total defense.
